How We Work

We partner with Florida schools to provide mental health support to middle and high school students in need of therapeutic intervention.

About Telement-School Partnerships

When a school team identifies an at-risk student, the School is required by Florida State Law under the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas Act to address the student’s social and emotional needs within 15 days. By partnering with Telement, our team of mental health professionals will work with you to understand the needs of the at-risk student and provide therapeutic support within the 15 day threshold. We work hand-in-hand with your school and caregivers throughout the entire process, helping to keep everyone informed along the way.

Our Part

Telement will provide individualized therapeutic support to address an at-risk student’s social, emotional, and mental health needs. Interventions are designed to target relevant behaviors and concerns. Sessions are conducted over a safe and secure video conferencing system that protects each student’s privacy.

Your Part

The School Team identifies the at-risk student and behaviors of concern and receives consent to proceed with therapy from the student’s parent/guardian.

School site requirements for the teletherapy sessions must include:

N

A confidential space for the student during their therapy session.

N

Video conferencing equipment (such as a computer with connected headphones and microphone)*

N

A strong internet connection.

N

A school staff member to provide tech and session scheduling support.

*The communication platform is not device-dependent since it is accessed through the website. Teletherapy sessions have been conducted on Windows-based PCs, Apple devices such as Macs and iPads and on other tablets and Chromebooks. We strongly discourage holding a session on a smart phone.

What to Expect During the

Initial Stages of Therapeutic Intervention

Let us help you with compliance of the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act, requiring students to receive therapeutic support initiated within 15 days of identification. In addition, Telement can provide counseling as a related service as identified on a student’s 504 plan or individualized education plan.

Once your school team identifies a particular student as being in need of therapeutic intervention and reaches out to Telement, a Telement therapist will begin by making contact with the three central treatment partners.

1. School Support Team

In Session One, the therapist will connect with the school support team to better understand the needs and behaviors of concern of the identified student.

2. Parent or Legal Guardian

In Session Two, the therapist will connect with the parent/guardian/primary caregiver(s) to better understand their concern(s) related to their child’s behavior and to establish informed consent for treatment.

3. Student

In Session Three, the therapist will connect with the student to establish fit, identify shared goals, and develop a better understanding of the student’s perspective.
